University selects Océ ColorWave 600 for ultra high volume, open access printing

Brentwood, Essex, 4 July 2011 – Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has invested in a third Océ ColorWave 600 production systems – reducing waiting times by over 90%.
MMU operates an open access print environment with massive peaks in demand from 3,000-plus art and design students and staff from the Manchester School of Art, and Manchester School of Architecture.

MMU previously ran a fleet of eight wide format colour printers. Despite this, peak term-time print queues extended to 72 hours, and the average A1 printing time exceeded 15 minutes. MMU selected Océ to improve productivity, utilising its unique Océ CrystalPoint™ technology. The eight machines have been replaced with three Océ ColorWave 600 production systems featuring Océ CrystalPoint technology.

Lawrence Paulson, MMU Deputy Campus ICT Team Leader, said: “Across all applications the Océ ColorWave 600 has proved more than five times faster than existing colour technology. Peak queuing times have reduced dramatically, from 72 hours to under eight hours, and the printing time has improved from over 15 minutes to just two minutes. In addition, we have witnessed a greater retention of students’ work in-house, which is a good outcome, improvements in our customer feedback on quality, and significant reductions in time spent servicing the printers.”

The Océ ColorWave600 uses unique Océ CrystalPoint technology to provide impressive quality with absolute consistency across all applications, and across multiple machines. The prints are robust and waterfast, even for outdoor applications. With a world-class speed of 31 seconds per A0, the Océ ColorWave600 sets new standards for unattended productivity. The 42-inch wide printer holds up to six media rolls, each containing up to 200 metres of plain paper. Prints can be output in the correct size so there’s no need for cutting.

John Haigh, MMU Campus ICT Team Leader, said: “The Océ ColorWave 600 enables students to process and print jobs much faster than on conventional inkjet machines. The production printing speed is a massive advantage. Across all applications it is about five times faster than existing plotters. The investments at MMU have certainly helped remove the pressure of peak workloads, and means that we no longer have the same degree of bottlenecks in production. The feedback from staff and students has been overwhelmingly positive.”

Duncan Smith, Director of Océ UK’s Wide Format Printing, said: “The speed and the application versatility of the Océ ColorWave 600 technology has proved ideally suited to the open access print environment at MMU. The Océ ColorWave 600 is a superb fit in the Higher Education environment, where peak term-time demand so often exceeds available print capacity.”
