Sustainability as it was meant to be
Labels, such as FSC or PEFC, are often seen as critical for sustainable paper. Océ has the opinion that sustainability is not only achieved through sustainable forest management. We are convinced that the environmental friendliness of a paper product is determined for a large part by the production process. Suppose that environmentally friendly, FSC-certified wood is processed into paper in a process that damages the environment, do we than still consider it a sustainable product? Océ focusses on sustainability in the entire production chain.
Therefore we attach great value to eco-labels that controll multiple aspects and have strict requirements for energy consumption, emissions to air and water, use of chemicals, et cetera. Environmental labels, such as the European Ecolabel, Nordic Swan or EMAS, are a useful add-on for certificates that only certify the origin of fibres (such as FSC or PEFC), and are ideally suited to guarantee sustainability throughout the complete production chain.
